Srinagar, January 18 (KNO) : Of late, a series of grenade attacks by militants on the forces in the city’s nerve centre Lal Chowk and elsewhere ahead of the Republic Day has prompted the security agencies to go in a huddle to thwart any major strike. In the past 24 hours, four grenades were hurled by the militants and in the past one week three such incidents were carried that resulted in the injuries to ASI and two traffic cops. What is worrisome for the forces is that these attacks are coming up at a time when forces agencies are already on a high alert. Pertinently, Jaish-e-Muhammad militant outfit has claimed responsibility of all the four attacks since January 11. Police is already busy conducting security drills for the upcoming January 26 functions. A police officer told KNO said that over the past one year, 250 militants were killed including top commanders of various militant outfits—Hizbul Muhajideen, Jaish-e-Muhammad, Lashkar-e-Toiba and Ansaar Gazwatul Hind last year. “This is for the first time in a decade that such a huge number of militants were killed. Now it looks like that militant group Jaish-e-Muhammad may have received a fresh consignment of grenades and they are targeting forces just to create an impression that militants were present and militancy alive, he told KNO. Inspector general of CRPF Srinagar sector Ravideep Singh Sahi said that militants seem to be desperate and that’s was why they are carrying out grenade attacks. “Our men are alert and we are going to review the acts of militants and take counter measures accordingly,” he said. “Situation is under control and there is no need to panic. We have already stepped up the forces deployment and asked all men to stay alert.”(KNO)
